Description

PET/VMPET/PE Laminated Film is a metallized flexible packaging structure combining a PET outer film, vacuum metallized PET (VMPET) and a PE inner sealing layer. The structure is designed for packaging applications that require a metallic appearance together with improved protection against light and enhanced barrier performance.

The PET outer layer provides mechanical strength and dimensional stability, while VMPET adds a reflective metallic surface and improves the barrier characteristics of the laminate. PE forms the inner heat-sealing layer and contributes flexibility to the finished packaging structure.

Compared with transparent PET/PE laminates, PET/VMPET/PE provides a different combination of appearance, light protection and barrier performance without using conventional aluminum foil.

What Is PET/VMPET/PE Laminated Film?

PET/VMPET/PE consists of three functional film layers:

PET / VMPET / PE

  • PET: provides the outer support layer, strength and dimensional stability.
  • VMPET: is vacuum metallized PET that provides a reflective metallic appearance and improves barrier performance.
  • PE: provides the inner heat-sealing surface and contributes flexibility.

VMPET is produced by depositing a very thin layer of aluminum onto PET under vacuum conditions. The metallized PET film can therefore provide some of the visual and functional characteristics associated with metallic packaging while maintaining the flexibility of a polymer-based film structure.

How the PET/VMPET/PE Structure Works

PET Outer Layer

PET acts as the outer structural layer of the laminate. It provides good dimensional stability and mechanical strength and can support suitable printing and converting processes.

For printed packaging, the PET layer can be selected according to the required printing method and surface treatment.

VMPET Metallized Layer

The VMPET layer is the defining feature of this laminate.

VMPET is PET film with a vacuum-deposited aluminum coating. The metallized surface creates the familiar silver, reflective appearance used in many flexible packaging products.

In addition to its visual effect, the metallized layer can reduce the transmission of light and improve barrier performance against oxygen and moisture compared with many transparent plastic film structures.

The actual barrier level depends on the VMPET grade, metallization quality, film thickness, lamination process and final packaging structure.

PE Inner Layer

PE forms the inner layer of the laminate and provides the heat-sealing surface for suitable bag and pouch manufacturing processes.

The selected PE grade can be matched to the required sealing temperature, sealing strength, flexibility and packaging equipment.

In simple terms:

  • PET: strength and dimensional stability
  • VMPET: metallized appearance, light protection and enhanced barrier
  • PE: heat sealing and flexibility

PET/VMPET/PE Structure

Layer Material Primary Function
Outer Layer PET Provides strength, dimensional stability and a suitable outer surface for printing.
Metallized Layer VMPET Provides metallic appearance, light protection and enhanced barrier properties.
Inner Layer PE Provides heat sealing and contributes flexibility to the finished laminate.

Why Choose PET/VMPET/PE Laminated Film?

The main reason to select PET/VMPET/PE is the combination of a strong PET outer film, a metallized barrier layer and a heat-sealable PE inner layer.

This structure can be useful when transparent packaging does not provide sufficient light protection or when the packaging design requires a metallic appearance.

It also offers an alternative to aluminum-foil-based laminates when the application does not require the highest level of barrier performance associated with foil structures.

Key Characteristics of PET/VMPET/PE

Characteristic Description
Metallic Appearance VMPET creates a bright silver and reflective packaging appearance.
Light Protection The metallized layer reduces light transmission compared with transparent film structures.
Barrier Performance VMPET can improve oxygen and moisture barrier performance compared with many non-metallized plastic structures.
Mechanical Strength PET provides strength and dimensional stability for converting and handling.
Heat Sealing PE provides the inner heat-sealing surface for suitable packaging processes.
Custom Printing The structure can be designed for customized packaging graphics according to the selected film and printing process.

PET/VMPET/PE vs. PET/AL/PE

Both structures contain PET and PE, but the middle layer is different. PET/AL/PE uses aluminum foil, while PET/VMPET/PE uses metallized PET.

Feature PET/VMPET/PE PET/AL/PE
Middle Layer VMPET Aluminum foil
Metallic Appearance Reflective metallic appearance Opaque aluminum appearance
Light Protection Good light-blocking capability depending on metallization Very high light protection
Barrier Level Enhanced barrier performance Very high barrier performance
Flexibility Flexible polymer-based structure Flexible foil-based laminate
Typical Positioning Metallized flexible packaging High-barrier foil packaging

PET/VMPET/PE vs. BOPP/VMPET/PE

Both structures use VMPET as the metallized layer, but the outer film is different. PET provides different mechanical and dimensional characteristics from BOPP, so the appropriate structure should be selected according to the packaging application.

Feature PET/VMPET/PE BOPP/VMPET/PE
Outer Film PET BOPP
Metallized Film VMPET VMPET
Inner Layer PE PE
Key Difference PET outer structure BOPP outer structure

Applications of PET/VMPET/PE Laminated Film

PET/VMPET/PE can be used for flexible packaging applications where metallic appearance, light protection and enhanced barrier performance are required.

  • Food packaging
  • Snack and dry food packaging
  • Pet food packaging
  • Powder packaging
  • Consumer product packaging
  • Light-sensitive product packaging
  • Printed stand-up pouches
  • Flexible packaging bags

The final structure should be selected according to the packaged product, required barrier level, filling process, sealing equipment and applicable regulations.

Printing and Packaging Appearance

One advantage of VMPET is its reflective metallic appearance. The silver surface can create a distinctive visual effect for flexible packaging and can be combined with customized printing to produce branded packaging designs.

Depending on the printing method and laminate construction, the metallized layer can be positioned and treated to achieve different visual effects. Packaging designers should confirm the intended appearance with a production sample before placing a large order.

Barrier Performance Considerations

PET/VMPET/PE provides enhanced barrier performance compared with many transparent PET/PE or BOPP/PE structures, particularly for light protection and certain oxygen and moisture barrier requirements.

However, VMPET should not automatically be considered equivalent to aluminum foil. The actual oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) depend on the metallization quality, film grade, thickness and converting process.

For applications requiring extremely high and consistent barrier performance, an aluminum foil laminate such as PET/AL/PE may be more appropriate.
