Description
BOPP/VMPET/PE Laminated Film is a three-layer flexible packaging material combining BOPP, vacuum metallized PET (VMPET) and PE. Each layer performs a different function within the packaging structure: BOPP provides the outer film surface, VMPET contributes a reflective appearance and enhanced barrier performance, while PE provides the inner heat-sealing layer.
This structure is designed for flexible packaging applications where packaging appearance, light protection, moisture resistance and sealing performance are important. It can be supplied as roll stock for further conversion into bags, pouches and other flexible packaging products.
What Is BOPP/VMPET/PE Laminated Film?
BOPP/VMPET/PE is a three-layer laminated film structure:
BOPP / VMPET / PE
VMPET stands for Vacuum Metallized Polyethylene Terephthalate. It is PET film coated with a very thin layer of aluminum under vacuum metallization conditions.
The three layers work together:
- BOPP: provides the outer packaging surface, clarity, stiffness and suitable printing characteristics.
- VMPET: provides a metallic appearance and contributes to light and barrier performance.
- PE: provides the flexible inner surface and heat-sealing function.
How the Three-Layer Structure Works
BOPP Outer Layer
BOPP is used as the outer layer to provide a clear or visually attractive packaging surface with useful stiffness and dimensional stability.
For printed packaging, BOPP can also serve as the outer film for customized graphics, depending on the selected film grade and printing process.
VMPET Barrier Layer
VMPET is metallized PET film with a thin aluminum coating. The metallized surface gives the laminate its characteristic silver or metallic appearance and contributes to protection against light and certain gases and moisture.
VMPET is different from conventional aluminum foil. Instead of using a relatively thick aluminum foil layer, VMPET uses a thin metallized coating on PET film.
This allows packaging manufacturers to obtain a metallic appearance and enhanced barrier performance while maintaining a flexible film structure.
PE Inner Layer
PE forms the inner layer of the laminate and provides the heat-sealing surface. It can be used for suitable bag and pouch manufacturing processes where the package needs to be sealed after filling.
In simple terms:
- BOPP: outer appearance, stiffness and printing
- VMPET: metallic appearance, light protection and enhanced barrier properties
- PE: flexibility and heat sealing
BOPP/VMPET/PE Laminated Film Structure
| Layer | Material | Main Function |
|---|---|---|
| Outer Layer | BOPP | Provides stiffness, dimensional stability, appearance and a suitable printing surface. |
| Metallized Layer | VMPET | Provides a metallic appearance and contributes to light and barrier protection. |
| Inner Layer | PE | Provides flexibility and heat-sealing performance. |
Why Use VMPET Instead of Aluminum Foil?
VMPET and aluminum foil are both used to improve the barrier performance and appearance of flexible packaging, but they are different materials and should not be treated as interchangeable.
VMPET consists of PET film with a thin metallized aluminum coating, while aluminum foil is a separate metal foil layer.
For packaging projects where a metallic appearance, light protection and a flexible multilayer structure are required, VMPET can be a practical option.
When extremely high barrier performance is the primary requirement, an aluminum foil laminate such as PET/AL/PE may be more appropriate.
BOPP/VMPET/PE vs. PET/AL/PE
| Feature | BOPP/VMPET/PE | PET/AL/PE |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | BOPP / VMPET / PE | PET / Aluminum Foil / PE |
| Metallic Appearance | Yes | Yes |
| Metal Layer | Thin aluminum coating on PET | Aluminum foil |
| Barrier Performance | Enhanced barrier performance depending on VMPET grade and laminate design | Very high barrier potential |
| Light Protection | Good, depending on metallization quality | Very high |
| Inner Sealing Layer | PE | PE |
| Typical Selection Focus | Metallic appearance, flexible barrier packaging and visual appeal | Maximum barrier protection for demanding applications |
Key Benefits of BOPP/VMPET/PE
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| Metallic Appearance | Creates a reflective silver appearance that can enhance packaging presentation. |
| Light Protection | The metallized layer helps reduce light transmission. |
| Barrier Performance | VMPET contributes to improved barrier performance compared with conventional transparent film structures. |
| Outer Film Stability | BOPP provides stiffness and dimensional stability to the outer structure. |
| Heat Sealing | PE provides the inner heat-sealing layer. |

Frequently Asked Questions
What is BOPP/VMPET/PE laminated film?
BOPP/VMPET/PE is a three-layer flexible packaging film consisting of BOPP, vacuum metallized PET and PE. BOPP provides the outer film, VMPET provides metallic appearance and enhanced barrier properties, and PE provides heat sealing.
What does VMPET mean?
VMPET means vacuum metallized PET. It is PET film coated with a thin layer of aluminum through a vacuum metallization process.
Is VMPET the same as aluminum foil?
No. VMPET is PET film with a thin aluminum metallized coating, while aluminum foil is a continuous metal foil layer. Their barrier performance and applications can therefore be different.
Is BOPP/VMPET/PE a high-barrier film?
It provides enhanced barrier performance compared with many conventional transparent plastic film structures. The actual barrier level depends on the VMPET grade, metallization quality, laminate construction and processing conditions.
Does BOPP/VMPET/PE provide heat sealing?
Yes. The PE inner layer provides the heat-sealing surface for suitable flexible packaging applications.
Can BOPP/VMPET/PE be printed?
Yes. Custom printing can be provided according to the selected film, printing process and packaging artwork.

Mendes –
We’ve been using this BOPP/VMPET/PE laminated film for our snack packaging lines in São Paulo for the past three months, and the results are impressive. The barrier properties are exactly what we needed—our products stay fresh much longer compared to the films we used before. The metallized layer provides excellent light and moisture protection, which is critical given Brazil’s varied climate conditions. The film runs smoothly on our high-speed packaging machines without any issues, and the heat seal strength is consistently reliable.
With the growing demand for flexible packaging solutions in Brazil’s food and beverage sector, finding a supplier that delivers consistent quality at a competitive price is not easy. ZXCOOL has been a reliable partner so far. We’re planning to increase our order volume for the next quarter.
